Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi that occurs during the Dhanu/Margazhi month in the Hindu calendar. It is also called Pankodhar Ekadashi, Vijaya Ekadashi, Mokshada Ekadashi. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is an important festival dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Devotees fast on this day, observe vigil the whole night and do Japa, Hari Kirtan and meditation. On the day of Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, Lord Krishna gave Arjuna the teachings of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita in Kurukshetra. Vaikuntha Ekadashi fasting is an important aspect of those associated with it. On this day, the Vaikuntha Dwaram or the Vaikuntha Vaasal, 'The Gates of Vaikunta' are believed to be kept open.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi festival is of great significance at the Tirupati Balaji Temple, Srirangam Sri Ranganatha Temple and at the Bhadrachalam Temple. Devotees, who are not capable to fast completely, can even eat fruits and milk. Eating rice and grains is not allowed on any ekadashi, for everyone.
