Sheetala Saptami is an important Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Sheetala or Sheetala Mata. People worship Sheetala Mata to protect themselves, their children and family members from getting inflicted from diseases like chicken pox and smallpox. This festival is celebrated with great fervour all over India, specially the rural regions. The major festivity is observed in the rural regions and primarily in the areas of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. It is celebrated in the month of Shravan during the Shukla Paksha on Saptami.

On the day of Sheetala Saptami, the devotees abstain themselves from cooking and they only eat the stuff or food which was prepared a day prior. On Sheetala Saptami some of the devotees also get a âmundanâ (shaving of the head) in the honour of Goddess Sheetala. Hindu devotees worship Sheetala Mata on this day, along with their children to seek protection from such diseases.
