Kalabhairav Jayanti Katha: Story of Kalabhairav
In Puranas, a very laxative story is told about the birth of Kalabhairava. According to which once Brahma Ji and Vishnu Ji started a debate on who is the best. There was a dispute about both of them. The dispute increased so much that the two started fighting among themselves as to who was the best. After this, when all the Gods asked Vedas, the answer came that those who have grasped the world, past, future, and present are the best. That is, Lord Shiva is the best.On hearing this from the mouth of Veda, Brahma got very angry and he said very good and bad about Shiva with his fifth mouth. After hearing which Vedas became sad. At the same time Lord Rudra appeared as a divine being. Then Brahma said, O Rudra, you were born with my own head. I have named your name Rudra because of excess cry, so you come to my service.
Shiva was enraged at this behavior of Brahmaji and he produced Bhairava and asked him to rule over Brahma. The divine power-rich Bhairav cut off the fifth head of Brahma Ji, who uttered insulting words towards Shiva with the fingernail of his left hand. Later, at the behest of Shivji, Bhairavji left for Kashi where he got freedom from killing Brahm. Rudra appointed him the Kotwal of Kashi. Even today they are worshiped as the Kotwal of Kashi. It is said that Viswanath's philosophy is incomplete without the Kotwal of Kashi.
